There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen.

It was a little small shop just the right size for Dolls—Lucinda and Jane Doll-cook always bought their groceries at Ginger and Pickles.

It belonged to two Dolls called Lucinda and Jane; at least it belonged to Lucinda, but she never ordered meals.
Jane was the Cook; but she never did any cooking, because the dinner had been bought ready-made, in a box full of shavings.
There once lived a businessman named Dhandat, who travelled the seas doing business in foreign lands. Whatever money he made he would spend on good causes in his town. He would build schools for the children, hospitals for the sick and food houses for the hungry.
Once, while on his trip back home, Dhandat was looking up into the night sky where he noticed a strange sight.
